Updated Feature: Contextual Playlist

2 Comments February 15th, 2010 by Will Spaetzel

One of the coolest features in the new version of CastRoller is the playlist that appears next to the player on the episode page for all podcasts. We just rolled out a new feature to make the playlist a lot more relevant to what you are currently doing.

The playlist is now filled in with more episodes from whatever list of episodes you were viewing to get to that episode. So if you are viewing a podcast’s page, the playlist will have more episodes from that podcast, if you were viewing your Starred Episodes, the playlist will have more starred episodes and so on.

This update should make it even easier to enjoy the content that you love on CastRoller.

Announcing a Bold new Version of CastRoller

3 Comments February 9th, 2010 by Will Spaetzel

We just launched a brand new version of CastRoller which comes with a great new look and feel as well as many great new features. Read on to learn more about the new site or visit CastRoller to see it for yourself.

New Channel Page

When viewing a Channel on CastRoller, you’ll be immediately shown a large player perfect for viewing video or listening to audio. More episodes from the channel are shown in a playlist right next to the player, letting you skip through all of the episodes in the channel. With this update, you’ll find that you are enjoying a lot more great content on CastRoller.

Episode Page

Similar to the new Channel page, the Episode page now also shows a playlist of more episodes for you to enjoy. You can click to immediately start playing more episodes from the same podcast, or start related episodes from other podcasts.

Also, when podcasters include full show notes in their feeds, the information is now available right on the Episode page. Just click “Full Description” to have the full show notes displayed on the page.

Podcasts

The big news for Podcasts is that podcasters can now claim their podcasts on CastRoller. This lets them update the details for the podcast as well as set options for how the podcast appears on CastRoller.

We have also revamped the podcast directory. The top podcast and episode lists are now refreshed more often and the information is now based on recent activity on CastRoller, so the lists are more dynamic and highlight the best content on CastRoller.

User Home Page

When you log in to CastRoller and view your personalized home page, you’ll see a new interface that makes it easier to check the content that is personalized for you. The new tabs allow you to switch between your sections quickly and easily.

This new version opens the door to a lot of new features to come soon. Be sure to check out CastRoller Blog to read about updates as they happen.

We want to be able to register a vanity url for CastRoller on Facebook, but we need 100 fans first. Anyone who becomes a fan of CastRoller on Facebook and is among the first 100 will be entered into a draw to win a brand new iPod Shuffle.

If you are already a fan, please invite your friends. The sooner we reach 100 fans, the sooner that you’ll have a chance to win a new shuffle!

Update: The contest is now over, and the winner is Calvin Horne who is Calvin on CastRoller.

If you have enabled automatic posting of your shared episodes to Twitter, we have made an update that makes things easier for you. Previously if you chose to share the episode with a note, the post on Twitter did not contain your note, and instead had the title of the episode as the Tweet. Now, if you share with a note, we will use your note as the text of the Tweet instead, of course shortening the text to fit within the 140 character limit.

New Feature: Share Episodes with your Contacts

0 Comments July 14th, 2008 by Will Spaetzel

Last evening we published a brand new feature that will greatly increase the social aspect of CastRoller. You can now share any podcast episode with any of your contacts on CastRoller. You can either share with one of your contacts or with all of your contacts.

When an episode is shared with you, it appears in your inbox. A new page that lists all of your received episodes. Of course, there is an RSS feed for your inbox, so you can have all of the episodes shared with you automatically appear on your computer or device.

You will also be sent an e-mail letting you know the details of the shared episode. You can opt out of receiving these e-mails with a new option available on the settings page.

We hope you enjoy the new feature, please let us know what you think!

Scheduled Maintenance this Evening

CastRoller will be unavailable from 5:30 EDT to 7:00 EDT this evening for scheduled maintenance.

We will be moving the site over to new servers to better accomodate our growing needs.

Update: The move went smoothly with no down time. We made some updates to CastRoller’s DNS, so please let us know if you you find anything wrong.

Trouble with the Site

0 Comments July 7th, 2008 by Will Spaetzel

In order to better prepare ourselves for traffic, we moved over to a new webhost, Mosso. Unfortunately, they are experiencing some difficulties at the moment that are impacting CastRoller.

Hopefully the problem will resolve itself shortly. I will update this post once things are back to normal.

Update: The problem has been resolved, sorry for any inconvenience.

Filter Channel Episodes

Filter Channel Episodes Originally uploaded by William Spaetzel

I just published a new feature to CastRoller that lets you filter the episodes for any channels or podcasts. This lets you choose to see or listen to just the content that you would like. If you want just the best content, you can also filter the episodes by PostRank using AideRss to get just be best episodes from the channels or podcasts.

And, there is also a feed for the filtered content, so if you don’t have time to consume all of the episodes of your favorite podcasts or channels, you can subscribe to the feed and have only the best episodes come automatically to your device.
